Here is a free amigurumi Yoshi pattern I made.I was inspired to make this after making an amigurumi super mario for my brother.This amigurmi Yoshi took me a few days to complete, mainly because I was trying to keep track of my pattern so I could post it here for everyone. I used a turquoise color only because I had no green, but remember that Yoshies come in different colors and yours can be any color of your choice. The finished product should measure approximately 10 1/2 – 11 inches tall.
Materials needed:
Yarns-
- Yoshi color of your choice (mine was turquoise)
- Boot color of your choice (mine was purple)
- White
- Red
Materials-
- Black felt
- White Felt
- Embroidery thread to stitch certain pieces together (optional)
- Fiberfill of your choice
Tools-
- Size G hook
- Wide eyed needle
- Scissors
- Stitch marker
- Glue gun (optional)

*I know the eye pattern gets a little loopy towards the end, but just follow it. It is just to make sure the bottoms of the eyes are not too narrow, nor too wide*
Hands/Arms:
(Make two, in your Yoshi’s color)
Round 1: Sc 6 into magic ring (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Rounds 3-5: sc around (12)
(this next round is where you make the thumbs)
Round 6: sc in next 3 sts, ch 5, sc in second ch from hk and remaining 3 chs. This completes the thumb for now. Continue working sc into next nine sts of your current round. (12)
Round 7: sc around (12)
Round 8: dec 6 times (6)
Round 9: sc around (6)
Round 10: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Rounds 11-14: sc around (12)
Round 15: Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, around (18)
F/O leaving long tail to attach arms to body.
(Stuff lightly.In order give the thumb more dimension, fold it in half and stitch it down)
Legs:

(I know that at this point the boots look more like an oddly shaped light bulb than anything, but there is one more step to turning them into a fabulous pair of boots ^_^
Stuff the boots at their widest area, making them round. Do not stuff them up to the top.
Once you have filled the widest area with fiber fill, fold the end of the boots upward to form an “L” and sew them into place so that they keep their shape.
I know this is not the best method of making boots, but I just couldn’t make any others work with this Yoshi)
Spikes:

Saddle:

Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch; 3 sc in last ch, turn sideways and continue along other side of the foundation ch, sc in remaining loop of ea of next 5 ch, 2 sc in first ch of this rnd, sl st to first sc. Turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, 2 sc in ea of next 2 sc, sc in ea of next 5 sc, 2 sc in ea of next 3 sc, sc in ea of next 7 sc, join with a sl st to first ch. Turn.
(switch to white)
Round 3: ch 1 and sc in same st as sl st, sc around and sl st into first st of round. (22)

Some assembly required:
Did I say “some”? I meant a crap load. So we will begin with attaching the snout to the head, which is going to possibly be the most difficult assembling to explain.
Attaching head to snout:
If you’ll notice, the snout is left wide open. Place the end of the head where you fastened off, slightly into the snout, so that the snout is “cupping” the head. Now use the tail you left on the snout to sew the two pieces in place.
Attaching the eyes:
Now you will attach the two eyes on top of the head. If you are having a hard time telling the snout and head apart, just remember that the head is smaller than the snout. Make sure the eyes are close together. I used a dot of glue from a glue gun to make sure the eyes were stuck together in the center. If your eyes seem close enough, don’t worry about it.
Attaching boots to legs:
Set the now attached head/snout/eyes aside for now. To get the boots on the legs, simply stick the open ends of the legs into the boots and use the same color of yarn as your boots to stitch the leg into place.
Attaching tail to body:
The reason this will be the first thing you attach to the body is because it can be used as a reference for where everything else being attached to the body should go. It doesn’t really matter what side of the body you place it on because the body is the same all the way around, just make sure you position it towards the bottom of the body. After you have finished stitching it onto the body with the tail of yarn you left after fastening off, try to shape it so that it is pointing slightly upward, just like Yoshi’s tail.
Attaching legs to body:
Imagine the legs are shaped like a “P” Now, place the legs on either side of the body so that the “P” is facing towards the tail. If that isn’t very clear (which it probably isn’t) just reference the pictures. Once you have them in place, stitch them on with either the same kind of yarn as your Yoshi, or thin thread that wont stand out, that way it looks seamlessly attached 🙂
Attaching arms to body:
This is really simple. Just place one am on each side and stitch on with the tail of yarn you left after fastening off.
Attaching the Body:
Simply place the head on top of the body so that the snout is slightly pointed upward. Don’t tilt it upward too much though! use the long tail of yarn you left to stitch it to the head.
Attaching cheeks to mouth/tummy strip:
Before you start attaching these two pieces to your nearly finished Yoshi, you will need to attach them to each other. Place one cheek on each side of one end of the tummy strip as this picture demonstrates:
Before you say it, yes I know exactly what that picture looks like, but for the sake our art, lets not mention it 🙂
Attaching cheeks/mouth/tummy/strip to Yoshi:
The cheeks are going to be your best friends when attaching this piece to the rest of your Yoshi. place it so that There is one cheek on either side of the base of Yoshi’s snout. The wisest thing to do at this point is to stitch down from one cheek all the way around to the other cheek. You should be able to tell if your placement of the cheeks/tummy strip is right from these pictures:

This could easily be modified to be a Birdo pattern, too! I’m a beginner to crochet, so I’ve never done any pattern modifying. But I’m doing crochet ami mario characters for my whole family — my sister’s fave is Birdo, so nothing else will do.
You can see how similar Yoshi and Birdo are. Just need to modify the mouth, nix the saddle and front stripe, add some claws and a big red bow! I think I’m going to give it a shot!

Also, you could try adding the eyelids and lashes, maybe try using the pattern for the eyelids in my Dozey the Elephant pattern.

Hiya! Just wanted to say a huge thanks for posting this pattern! My best friend is a massive Yoshi fan and I’d been trying to figure out what to get him for Christmas since he made me promise not to buy him anything. Luckily he said nothing about making something! This was my first time crocheting (learned it as I worked on the ‘doll’) and I must say, I’m so grateful this was such a simple pattern to follow. Obviously I didn’t get it quite right, partly since I couldn’t figure out the FPSC and partly because I counted wrong on the tummy, but other than that, I’m pretty proud of how my first cricheting turned out! I just made this for my fiancee’s sister for Christmas. She LOVES Yoshi! It was the first Amigurumi I’ve EVER made and It was the hardest thing I’ve crochted but I’m pretty pleased! It was a very easy pattern to follow thank yous o much 😀

Yeah the eye section gets confusing, just ignore the count of 12 sts for that round. If you follow what the pattern says, it will turn out just fine. I didn’t really follow a typical format for the end of the eye pattern.

Hey Trish! Thanks for posting this AWESOME pattern. Its the only pattern I’ve seen that looks so much like Yoshi. I’ve been crocheting for a while now (since I was 10 actually, I’m 15 now :D) but this is my first amigurumi and I didn’t have a problem at all. It was really easy to follow and I’m almost done with mine. Just need to buy some felt and red thread for the spikes and the saddle. Maybe I can post pics when I’m done. Thanks again for the pattern!

Ok, i feel dumb because no one else seemed to have any problems and i’ve been crocheting for a few years now…i’m having issues w/ the saddle. Ch 8 but sc in 5, then 3 sc in last stitch. Am i supposed to sk the st in between? Thanks so much if you can assist!

Hi, I’m in the process of making mine right now, however I think I may have done something wrong on the thumb part,. When you chain 5 and go from there am I suppose to me stuffing that part? because its flat and looks odd at the moment

Thanks for the pattern!! I made this cute little guy for my husband for Christmas. He was very impressed! The one change I made was my position of his cheeks. Instead of putting them on his nose, I put them on his head and the little “mouth” was the only thing on his nose. (Does that even make sense?) You are a life saver, i was looking for a crochet dinosaur to make for my nephew’s third birthday in a week when I stumbled across your yoshi pattern. as he lives anything Mario I know he will love this, have done the head and snout so far. I just stumbled across your stuffed Yoshi. Thank you so much for posting your pattern and for free. I just made a corner to corner blanket with Yoshi in the center of it.
